The soil is the outermost covering on the Earth's crust and is a layered mixture of organic matter, which consists mainly of fallen leaves and other dead plant material at the top, with rock and mineral particles from the weathering of bedrock beneath.
Soil provides a habitat for many organisms and forms a substrate for the growth of plants, providing them with water and minerals.
Soil is a naturally renewable resource. Modern chemical-based agriculture can, however, cause soil depletion and sterility and in these situations be unsustainable.
