The term "sixth sense" is used to describe the ability humans and other animals seem to have to obtain information about the environment other than through the traditional five senses.
It is already apparent that some quite basic forms of perception cannot be accounted for just using the five senses.
It may be, therefore, that the sixth sense results from as-yet-undiscovered physical mechanisms within the body for detecting "extra" information present within the environment - say magnetism.
However, other forms of perception also covered by the term "sixth sense" imply more than this - information being obtained from "the past" or "the future", for instance, or across great distances.
Examples would be: "sensing" that the phone is going to ring and the identity of the caller just before it happens, a dog "knowing" when his owner is on his or her way home, or visual telepathy.
