Sexual reproduction is reproduction which involves two parents, resulting in the formation of new and unique offspring from the fusion of the male and female sex cells (gametes).
It seems likely that the main evolutionary advantage of sexual reproduction is the fact that the production of gametes, followed by fertilization, allows for increased genetic diversity to be generated with each successive generation.
This contrasts with asexual reproduction, which must rely only on mutations to provide differences in offspring.
The frequency of variation enabled by sexual reproduction aids evolution by natural selection.
