Sewage treatment plants are industrial locations where human faeces and other biological waste are broken down, using the action of micro- organisms.
Modern sewage-treatment plants result in the conversion of a very toxic waste which is a mixture of liquids and solids into (usually) a dry sludge, which is non-toxic and can be used as a fertiliser, and a liquid which can be safely returned to the water cycle, usually by discharge into a river or stream.
