Seaweed is the collective name given to algae whose habitat is the ocean.
Seaweeds may be microscopic, many metres in size, or any size in between these extremes.
They can vary in colour from red to brown to green shades, depending on the particular combinations of chlorophyll and other photosynthetic pigments that different species contain.
Seaweeds have various uses: they can be farmed or foraged for foods, used as fertilisers and food additives, and are potentially sources of biofuel.
