Recombination is the process by which two chromosomes exchange portions of their DNA.
The two strands of each DNA molecule cross over and then break and re-join at the cross-over points.
This results in a portion of DNA from one molecule / chromosome being exchanged with the other portion from the other molecule / chromosome.
Recombination occurring during meiosis between matching chromosome pairs explains how the offspring of sexual reproduction have a different combination of genes from their parents.
In genetic engineering, recombination is promoted between two chromosomes which may not even be from the same organism.
