A pyramid of numbers is the model that results when the numbers of organisms at each level in a food chain are calculated, and blocks relating in size to those numbers are drawn in place one above the other, upwards from the producer level.
Pyramids of numbers are often pyramidal in shape, but not always: for example many insects will be preyed on by a smaller number of predators, but may live on only one oak tree.
This contrasts with pyramids of biomass, which are always pyramidal in shape.
