The phenotype is the visible expression of the genotype, and includes any characteristic that can be observed - such as blue eyes or blonde hair - or otherwise detected or measured - such as the amount of a molecule produced by an organism, or its chemical structure.
It is the combination of its genotype and its environment that gives rise to the phenotype of any organism.
Variations in phenotypes (even between organisms with the same genotypes) therefore occur, and form the basis for natural selection.
