The nucleus of a cell can be thought of as the cell's "control centre".


It is a membrane-bounded organelle which contains the chromosomes, and within which the ribosomes are manufactured.


Some very simple types of organisms, called prokaryotes, do not have a nucleus: their genetic material is free in the cytoplasm.
