One of the two types of cells found within the nervous system, neurones are cells which are specialised to carry electrical signals around the body.
Neurones consist of a cell body, which contains the nucleus, and long processes (extensions of the cytoplasm) called axons, which carry the impulses to where the response will be caused.
This means that some neurones in humans can have axons of around a metre in length - those involved in connecting the spinal cord to the toes, for example.
