Fibre - also called roughage - is a necessary part of a healthy diet.

It consists of the indigestible parts of plant-based foods, such as cellulose and other large molecules.

Fibre helps food pass through the gut during digestion and some types of fibre also assist in regulating blood cholesterol levels by binding with cholesterol in the gut, preventing it reaching the blood.

Sources of dietary fibre include wholegrains, root and leaf vegetables.
