do you have an original graphic we could add here, relating to 'endoplasmic reticulum'? please see the main Gridbuilding page for details of how to get in touch

The endoplasmic reticulum is a complex system of flat folds of the cell membrane which project inwards through the cytoplasm, eventually joining with the nuclear membrane.

It provides a large surface area for chemical reactions within the cell, as well as a transport system for fluids from outside the cytoplasm to within it, and vice-versa.

Some areas of endoplasmic reticulum have the ribosomes situated on their surface. This is called rough endoplasmic reticulum. Areas where there are no ribosomes are called smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
