The Earth can be divided into three layers, from its surface to its centre.

The outermost (and thinnest) of these layers is called the Earth's crust and consists of the land, the seas and a layer immediately beneath them.

This layer is made of solid rock and varies from about 5 to about 25 miles thick, with the thicker portions underneath land, and the thinner portions under the deep ocean.

Most earthquakes originate in the Earth's crust.

The other two layers into which the Earth is divided, are the mantle and the core.
