The diet of humans, or other animals, is the foods which they eat.
Diets are also often described in terms of what proportion of the food groups - protein, carbohydrate, fat and fibre - they contain, and/or how much energy the foods contain.
A balanced diet is one which contains the major food groups, vitamins and minerals in the appropriate proportions for health and whose total energy content matches that required for respiration, movement, growth, repair, temperature regulation etc. with no additional, unhealthy weight gain or loss.
