There are two main types of consumers: primary consumers and secondary consumers. Primary consumers are any organisms in a food chain which obtain their food from eating producers. Secondary consumers are any organisms in a food chain which obtain their food from eating other consumers.
Consumers are, therefore, always animals of one type or another, never plants.
An example of a primary consumer would be a rabbit, which eats grass and the leaves / fruit of plants. An example of a secondary consumer, in the same food chain, would be any animal that eats the rabbit, for example a fox, or a buzzard.
