Coal is a sedimentary rock made from the remains of layers of prehistoric tropical plants.
Anne Evans
Coal is a fossil fuel produced by the action of heat and compression on the buried remains of prehistoric plants over time.
Coal has been the most widely used of the fossil fuels: its use allowed for the industrial revolution and it is still the largest fuel source for electricity generation.
Thus, it is the burning of coal which has been responsible for the greatest increase in greenhouse gases over the last century and a half.
