Clay is a naturally-occurring material which consists of small particles of minerals and impurities such as decayed plant matter, and which has a typical yellow or grey appearance and a sticky, pliable consistency when wet.

Clay forms the basis of many soils (clay soils) which are very fertile, and, when dried and hardened in air, or fired, clay can be made into pottery.
