Bees are flying insects, which live in highly organised groups, called colonies, and which are responsible for the pollination of at least a third of the food we eat, as well as making honey and wax (beeswax). The domestication of bees has gone on for thousands of years, around the world.
At the moment, bees are undergoing a bit of a crisis: all over the world, populations are declining massively, because of a phenomenon called "colony collapse disorder", where colonies just die off, for no apparent reason.
Theories for this include pests attacking the bees, decline of wildflowers and the use of pesticides and mobile phones by human beings.
Albert Einstein said that, due to their importance in the ecosystem, if bees were to die out, the human race would only survive for five years after them.
