Bacteria are heterotrophic, single-celled organisms, of microscopic size, which are found today in every habitat on Earth.


Bacteria have a different cell structure from either plants, or animals, because there are no membranes found around the nucleus or anywhere else inside the cell. Because of this, they are thought to be some of the earliest types of life.


Most bacteria are harmless, but some cause diseases, such as cholera and leprosy.
