ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone) is a hormone involved in the "stress response". It is produced by the pituitary gland, and acts by stimulating the production of further hormones by cells within the adrenal glands.
The stress response is thought to be an evolutionary advantage that enabled animals to make quick responses in situations of physical danger and so survive longer.
A high level of ACTH, however, over a considerable time, results in a permanently-overstressed state, which can have negative implications for health.
