FRENCH INDEX FRENCH - grammar - VERBS 05 GRAMMAR: INDEX

VERBS WHICH TAKE 'de' PLUS INFINITIVE - the 'orange series'

In VERBS 02 you saw verbs which are followed directly by the infinitive of another verb. Other verbs require 'de' before the infinitive - some examples are shown below. See also the 'banana series' (verbs which take 'à' plus infinitive) on VERBS 04. As you'll see, the 'de' (orange) series of verbs tends to have a slightly different 'mood', which will maybe help in remembering them.

avoir peur (de) - to be afraid (of) He is afraid of eating the orange. Il a peur de manger l'orange.
refuser - to refuse He refuses to eat the orange. Il refuse de manger l'orange.
être obligé de - to be obliged to He is obliged to eat the orange. Il est obligé de manger l'orange.
se dépêcher - to hurry He hurries to eat the orange. Il se dépêche de manger l'orange.
cesser - to stop He stops eating the orange. Il cesse de manger l'orange.
