VERBS WHICH TAKE 'à' PLUS INFINITIVE - the 'banana series'

In VERBS 02 you met some verbs which are followed directly by the infinitive of another verb. Verbs such as 'to teach' - 'enseigner' and 'to learn' - 'apprendre' require 'à' before the infinitive - other examples are shown below. See also the 'orange series' (verbs which take 'de' plus infinitive) on VERBS 05.

songer - to daydream, think about He thinks about eating the banana. Il songe à manger la banane.
résister - to resist He resists eating the banana. Il résiste à manger la banane.
hésiter - to hesitate He hesitates to eat the banana. Il hésite à manger la banane.
se décider - to decide He decides to eat the banana. Il se décide à manger la banane.
se préparer - to prepare (oneself) He prepares to eat the banana. Il se prépare à manger la banane.
commencer - to begin, to start He begins to eat the banana. Il commence à manger la banane.
s'occuper - to occupy oneself He occupies himself in eating the banana. Il s'occupe à manger la banane.
continuer - to continue He continues to eat the banana. Il continue à manger la banane.
s'habituer - to get used to He gets used to eating the banana. Il s'habitue à manger la banane.
persister - to persist He persists in eating the banana. Il persiste à manger la banane.
réussir - to succeed He succeeds in eating the banana. Il réussit à manger la banane.
