In CONNECTIONS 01 you learned about the basic uses of 'y' and 'en'.

Remember, though, that if you're saying 'ŕ', ('to'), or 'de' ('of', 'from') with reference to *people* you would generally use the pronouns in Column 4. Think back to the example in VERBS 09, and compare the word order with what follows.

I gave (to) her the vegetables.	Je lui ai donné les légumes.
I gave them to her.	Je les lui ai donné.

I gave (to) her the cake.	Je lui ai donné le gateau.
I gave some (of it) to her.	Je lui en ai donné.

And consider these:

There is .....	Il y a .....
There are .....	Il y a .....

There is no cake.	Il n'y a pas de gateau.
There isn't any. (of it)	Il n'y en a pas.
There are no vegetables.	Il n'y a pas de légumes.
There aren't any. (of them)	Il n'y en a pas.
