Before I tell you about the Great Lakes, I would just like to thank you all for sending in examples of the mnemonics that you use. It seems that the planets has been the most popular. Darla Minor has given me her version which is:
My Very Excellent Mother Just Sent Us New Pancakes. Now Alex Mayer is adding a little sophistication to the order of the planets by including the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. He gives us:
Mother Very Easily Made A Jelly Sandwich Under No Protest.
Now I don't need to tell you the order of the planets if you are a regular to the site but just in case this is your first time they are:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, (Asteroid Belt) Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
Many thanks to Darla and Alex for their contributions. Darla has also given me this month's mnemonic which is how to remember the names of the Great Lakes of the North American continent.
HOMES = Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior
Update - 17th October 2009 - thanks go to Heather Burnett who has written in to say that other mnemonics for the Great Lakes provide additional information, because of the word order.
"Sam's Horse Must Eat Oats" gives the order of the lakes according to size,
"Sergeant Major Hates Eating Onions" tells you the order of the lakes from west to east.
Thank you, Heather.
