As you know, I have been writing about common mnemonics here for a year now. But you have not been idle yourselves and I am getting some excellent examples of mnemonics that work for you. In April last year I gave you a mnemonic for the colours of the rainbow. (Can't remember? Well go and look then!) Melissa Miller was the first person to send in an alternative mnemonic that may be easier for you. Just think of the name Roy G Biv to give you the colours of the rainbow in the correct order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet).
Dr C Taylor has suggested another mnemonic to distinguish between port and starboard on a ship (see November 1998). Which is left and which is right? Dr Taylor says that it is easy to remember that starboard = right by remembering that 'r' and 's' are next to each other in the alphabet. You can also remember that port = left by knowing that if adults have too much port they will lean to the left!
Thanks to Melissa Miller and Dr Taylor for giving me those examples. If you have any good mnemonics please send them in and I'll put them up on the site.
