The 1999 Brain of the Year Award
You will have probably noticed that with the odd exception, most of the Great Minds I have written about died many years ago. What I want to do this month is talk about a couple of living great minds and what better way to do that than tell you about the joint winners of the 1999 Brain of the Year Award. This award is given annually by the Brain Trust in recognition of Superlative Mental Achievement. Past winners include Gary Kasparov, Professor Stephen Hawking and Ted Hughes the Poet Laureate. The joint winners this year were John Glen and Michael Gelb.
Senator John Glenn
Senator John Glenn is most famous for being the first American to orbit the earth in Space. Prior to that he was a highly decorated pilot in both the Second World War and the Korean War. He was also the first pilot to cross the USA at an average supersonic speed. He recently made history when, at the age of 77, he returned to space aboard the Shuttle Discovery. He is now the Senator for Ohio and has served an unprecedented four consecutive terms and is considered a leading expert in scientific and technical matters. Considered an American hero, he represents the "Can-do" attitude of his country.
Michael Gelb
Michael Gelb is an international best selling author and expert on the body, brain and thinking. (See the Review of "Lessons from the Art of Juggling" in October 1998 and this month's review of "How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci".) A 3rd Degree Black Belt in Aikido he is also an expert Juggler having once juggled on stage with the Rolling Stones. One of the world's foremost authorities on Creative Thinking and Accelerated Learning, Michael actually applies what he teaches in his own life.
