Rembrandt Van Rijn
Rembrandt was born in 1606 in Leiden Holland, the 8th child of a miller. With a middle class upbringing he showed early academic promise and attended the local Latin School and then university. With Pieter Lastman as his artistic mentor, Rembrandt achieved early success and had seven paintings commissioned by Prince Frederick Hendrick of Orange. His dealings with this patron were not to his satisfaction and so Rembrandt decided to work for the open market. He signed a contract with an Amsterdam dealer and began producing portraits and small historical paintings.
In 1634 he married and after the early loss of a son and two daughters, his son Titus was born. His most famous painting The Night Watch was completed the same year that his wife died. His work was innovative in that it transformed a group portrait into an animated crowd. Self Portraits completed throughout his life showed a penetrating honesty since unsurpassed.
His decline into bankruptcy and the tragic loss of his son inspired The Return of the Prodigal Son which he probably completed in the year of his death. His depiction of light and shadow and his attention to detail and colour intensities are a measure of his artistic brilliance. It is a shame that his unwillingness to work for patrons opened him up to the whims of the open market which tragically let him down. Only after his death has his brilliance been truly recognised.
