The Pyramid Builders
The Great Pyramid near Cairo in Egypt was built as a tomb for Khufu. It was designed not only to contain his body but also as a vehicle for his resurrection. It is a huge structure consisting of nearly 2 ½ million separate blocks of limestone each weighing over 2 ½ tonnes each. It was nearly 500 feet high and each of the four sides at the base is nearly 800 feet long so that the base covers nearly 13 acres.
The builders of this great structure are not identified but nevertheless they should be recognised for their architectural, engineering and organisational brilliance for constructing a masterpiece of such huge proportions. That it is the only surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the World is testimony to its genius. It is aligned to the cardinal points of the compass such that the maximum error is no more than 0.083 of a degree.
Recent studies have tried to emulate the precision necessary to accurately manoeuvre and position pyramid size blocks with similar technology to that believed available to the ancient Egyptians. Those studies have shown that the skill and engineering brilliance required of those involved was indeed remarkable.
