DAVID THOMAS
David Thomas legitimately lays claim to having the most
powerful memory in the Western Hemisphere. In 1998, after
seven attempts, David recalled the first 22,500 numbers of Pi
(p ) at the seventh attempt in 4 hours and 25 minutes
claiming both the British and European records, a feat that
has been acknowledged by the Guinness Book of Records.
This feat has only ever been exceeded by 3 other people and
is a tremendous example of what the mind is capable of.
By David's own admission, he comes from a working class
background and grew up with an alcoholic mother and a
father who left home when he was only 6 years old. He left
school having failed his A-levels (including Maths) and
became a fireman. About 3 years ago, inspired by the World
Memory Champion Dominic O'Brien, David started to train
his memory. In the 1996 World Championships he came 4th
achieving the level of International Grandmaster of Memory
and last year went one better by winning the Bronze medal.
David's achievements show what can be done with drive,
ambition and the persistent discipline to stick to a rigorous
training schedule.
