Mary Anning (1799-1847)
Mary Anning was one of the worlds first successful palaeontologists. Born in Lyme Regis in the UK at the very end of the 18th Century, she was left to fend for herself at the age of 11 when her father died. She knew that the cliffs around Lyme Regis were rich with fossils and so she set about learning how to find them and excavate them in the best possible condition.
At the tender age of 12 she discovered and successfully excavated the skeleton of a complete Ichthyosaurus. She also discovered the first complete Plesiosaurus and the very first Pterodactyl.
Her success was derided as a freak of nature but in actual fact was due to her persistence, knowledge and vision.
