WINSTON CHURCHILL
Winston Churchill was one of the most influential figures of
the Second World War and led Britain through some of her
darkest times. Born in 1874 his career included time in the
military, a period as a journalist and ultimately a long and
illustrious career in politics. He entered parliament in 1900
and held a number of positions including Minister for War
and the chancellor of the Exchequer before becoming Prime
Minister in 1940. An impressive orator he is best
remembered for his "Blood, tears, toil and sweat" speech
and for the often quoted "Never, never, never, never, never
give in" statement made to a group of students. His
determination to overcome obstacles was best illustrated by
his constant battle with depression (something he called his
"little black dog") which he never let affect his outcome.
Winston Churchill died in 1965 and was given a state
funeral.
