Michael Fidlow introduces this excellent book with the above statement which really captures the reason why people tend to forget things. If you are not interested you will not pay attention which means you probably will not understand what is going on and so you will not learn and thus will not be able to recall. That explains why (for men at least) we are able to remember every important result for our favourite football team yet are unable to remember to put the rubbish out on collection day.
Fidlow shows how our natural memory works and then generates a simple formula for enhancing your ability to learn and retain anything you want without necessarily having to resort to sophisticated mnemonic techniques (although these do have their part to play in effective recall). The first part of this formula is to have the right attitude and the last is to provide yourself with an incentive - crucial steps in any endeavour. He goes on to show that you do not necessarily have to commit everything to memory and that just knowing where to find the information is enough.
Fidlow completes his book by giving good practical advice on how to remember things that most of us struggle to cope with. This is definitely a book for those of us who think our memories are not as good as they used to be and want to do something about it.
