UNDERSTANDING MIND MAPS
IN A WEEK
This month's review again concentrates on Mind Maps but this time it is a book written by someone other than the Technique's originator Tony Buzan. A good measure of a technique's success is when you find books about it written by someone different to the inventor. The Institute of Management Foundation commissioned this book as part of their "How to in a Week" series.
Understanding Mind Maps in a Week by Steve Morris and Jane Smith is an excellent little book which, as the title suggests is designed to be read in a week. Split into seven sections, each day has on average 12 pages each and through your week's reading you will learn what a Mind Map is, how to read and draw them, how brain friendly the technique is (a crucial stage so that the importance of the rules is understood) and what you can use the Mind Map for. Although designed for business people the volume is just as useful to students. The book is about as interactive as a book can get with suggested activities to reinforce important points and answers to commonly asked questions. The Mind Map examples are very good and it is a shame that they are not in colour but this should not distract from what is an excellent book. It is very easy to complete this book in a week and with the information it contains you will be in a very strong position to use Mind Maps effectively. Although it only takes a week to learn, Morris and Smith do emphasise that you must practice and use the technique regularly to gain the real benefits.
I like this book very much and I am only sorry that I did not write it first because this is how I would want my book to be. Buy it, even if you have Tony Buzan's Use Your Head or The Mind Map Book.
Understanding Mind Maps in a Week by Steve Morris and Jane Smith (ISBN 0-340-71174-4) is published by Hodder and Stoughton and is available from good bookstores at Ł6.99.
