BOOST YOUR MINDPOWER
by Jonathan Hancock
There are three reasons why you should read this book. The first is that Jonathan is a former World Memory Champion (the only person to have beaten the legendary Dominic O'Brien). The second reason is that Jonathan has applied his techniques to great effect at college and university. And the third reason? Well it is actually a pretty good book about memory.
The book is divided into four parts that explain the principles of a good memory, how to memorise word-related information, how to memorise numeric information and a section on the application of the techniques to everyday life.
Jonathan's approach is extremely descriptive and a quick scan of the book may put you off from reading it because he seems to go into too much detail so that it appears hard work to use his techniques. However, do not take his attention to detail lightly. The descriptions of the application of memory principles to the generation of mnemonic imagery are the best that I have come across. As you read his descriptions, if you create the scenes in your own mind, you will get a very good impression of how to create a memorable image. His section on learning a foreign language is particularly powerful.
It is a book that is packed with specific examples of how to remember a variety of information that is especially useful to students. I must admit that I skipped his section on dealing with numbers because his approach is very different to the method that I use but I can guarantee that if you adopt his technique, numbers will be easy for you to recall. Remember, Jonathan has been World Memory Champion so it must work.
If you buy this book, you will need to persevere through some of the sections but I can guarantee that if you apply the techniques that are described, you will be able to remember absolutely anything that you want to.
Boost Your Mindpower (ISBN 0-340-68179-9) by Jonathan Hancock is published by Coronet Books and is available from good bookstores at Ł5.99.
