Memory Pack - Master Your Memory is the first product
to be produced by Andi Bell, the 1998 World Memory
Champion (I tried to beat him but he was just too good for
me so I settled for the Silver Medal). Previous World
Champions have started with books and so to break that
mould, Andi has developed a Memory Pack. Quite often
when you buy a product that comes in a substantial box,
you are often disappointed with tiny contents and massses
of packaging. Happily, Andi's Pack is full of stuff. You get a
Memory Book that explains his ideas and methods, a set of
name cards, a set of number cards, a"Memory Bean
Bag"and a board game with dice and counters. Although
Andi's methods follow the essential principles of
Imagination and Association, you will find his thinking and
some of his techniques very unique.
The Memory Book covers traditional topics you would
expect such as Names and Faces, Numbers, General
Knowledge, Speeches and Text. However Andi also explores
the concept of Time Lines, Networks and a test of your
visual memory. I like Andi's Name and Faces Cards. He has
designed them so that by combining different names with
different faces you get many more combinations than by
just having 50 faces each with a single name. Andi teaches
you his number system which must be effective as he
recently broke a world record by memorising 1820 digits in
one hour at the World Memory Championships! He uses his
images and associations for the numbers and explains how
they were derived. He then uses the number system as part
of the board game to help you reinforce it and for you to use
it as a tool to see what you have learnt. There are really two
games in one and both allow you to demonstrate your
developing memory skills.
Overall this is a nicely presented pack and if you want to
find out how one of the leading memorisers does his stuff
and have some fun in the process, then you will find The
Memory Pack useful. However, some of Andi's thoughts
and techniques are quite advanced and will require quite a
bit of mental effort so if you relish a mental challenge have a
go.
