We receive many requests for help with English! so we've put together a range of free worksheets on the site here, as well as linking to excellent resources elsewhere on the Internet.

LEARNING ENGLISH (as a second language) : 800 free worksheets are now on line in "Any Language to English"; 800 free worksheets have been completed for English-French-English, and around 400 each so far, for Romanian-English, Russian-English and Polish-English. Free dual-language worksheet sets are now in preparation for several other languages including German and Spanish ..... see the Translators' page for languages currently in progress.

LEARNING TO READ: The free-to-print reading system "Bricks and Mortar" teaches children the basics of learning to read [even the first 40 pages of notes & disks of this system should be enough to allow children to progress to simple structured reading books].

SOUNDS AND SPELLINGS: Spellings, Sounds & Meanings works on the same principle as Bricks & Mortar, the sound each word makes. SSM approaches the English language from many different angles - from dictionary meanings to spelling and writing practice, from wordsearches to making crosswords, from worksheets for lateral thinking to worksheets for writing poems and even mc lyrics.

The whole resource is themed around a "Sounds Database", where words are grouped according to the *sounds* they make, rather than their spelling. Children first learn language by what it sounds like - not what it looks like - and this whole resource has been designed to re-awaken that "joy in sound" that children start out with.

23rd February 2008: 2500+ free worksheets have now been made available from the Sounds Database - along with over 400 sound files - and the "templates" page gives more information about the structuring of this resource.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR: Excellent free resources (including exercises) for all aspects of English grammar are on line at the University of Victoria, in Canada; and simple instructions and exercises are available from BBC Skillswise, in England.
